How to Choose a Personal Trainer in Toronto

Move Well. Feel Great. #MVMTGAINS

Toronto has no shortage of personal trainers, and most of them will make you tired. Far fewer will make you better. This guide is the checklist JAMFITNESS founder Antonio Montes uses after 20+ years in the fitness industry: what to require, what to look for, and the red flags that should send you elsewhere.

1. Non-negotiable qualifications

  • An educational degree or diploma, and/or an accredited certification. Ask which one, and where it’s from.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Liability insurance.
  • Real coaching experience. Look for a minimum of 10+ years of coaching.

2. What distinguishes the top personal trainers in Toronto

  • They assess your movement before they train you. Can they identify your limitations? A good trainer screens how you move before adding load. Here is what a full movement assessment includes.
  • They communicate clearly. Do they explain the why behind each exercise, not just the what?
  • They have client results. Ask for testimonials or before-and-after stories, and check their Google reviews.
  • They specialize in people like you. Beginners, lifters on a plateau, people with recurring pain, weekend athletes: the match matters.
  • You can work with them. You will see this person 2-3 times a week. Personality fit is not a small thing.

3. Red flags

  • No certifications or credentials
  • Cookie-cutter programs, where everyone does the same thing
  • Promises of unrealistic results (“Lose 20 lbs in 2 weeks!”)
  • Pushy sales tactics or long-term contracts
  • They don’t assess your movement before training you

4. Ask about price and what it includes

A good trainer tells you what it costs without a “contact us for pricing” runaround, and tells you what’s included. For reference, JAMFITNESS pricing is published: a 50-minute MVMT Session is $125 and a 100-minute 10xHealth Session is $175. Every package includes personalized programming, movement assessments, nutrition guidance and support between sessions, with no hidden fees.

5. Choosing between a personal trainer and a health coach

A personal trainer programs and coaches your workouts. A health coach helps you get clear on your goals and build the habits that support them. The best fit for most people is someone who does both: a coach who assesses how you move, builds a program around it, and helps you plan the training schedule and habits that make it stick. If you have an acute injury, sharp pain, numbness or tingling, see a physiotherapist or doctor first; a movement coach is where you rebuild once you are cleared.

6. Where you train matters too

The best trainer is one you will actually get to. JAMFITNESS trains clients out of boutique studios at 235 Carlaw Ave in East Toronto and in Yorkville, in condo gyms where logistics allow, and online:

Test a trainer before you commit

The simplest test is a conversation. JAMFITNESS offers a free, no-pressure Health Coaching Session to talk through your goals, what you can expect from working with a coach, and how to plan your training, so you can judge the fit before you spend anything.
