Training Philosophy & Approach

What makes JAMFITNESS different from other Toronto personal trainers?

Most trainers focus on how much weight you can lift. I focus on how well you move, then build strength on that foundation.

The JAMFITNESS difference:

  1. Movement-First Training: Fix movement patterns before adding load
  2. Pain-Free Approach: Training shouldn’t hurt – we work around limitations
  3. ICF Coaching Aligned: Coaching methodology, not just exercise prescription
  4. 20+ Years Experience: Seen every injury, plateau, and excuse
  5. No BS Philosophy: Straight talk, real results, sustainable habits

What’s your training style?

Think coach-to-friend, not drill sergeant. Here’s what to expect:

  • No yelling or hype: You’re an adult, you know why you’re here
  • Movement education: I explain WHY, not just WHAT
  • Progressive overload: Gradual strength building that lasts
  • Honest feedback: I’ll tell you the truth, not what you want to hear
  • Abundance mindset: Train smarter, not just harder

Sessions are challenging but sustainable. You should leave feeling better than when you arrived.

What should I look for in a personal trainer in Toronto?

Based on 20+ years in the industry, here’s what actually matters:

Essential qualifications:

  • Educational Degree/ Diploma and/or Accredited Certification
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification
  • Liability insurance
  • Minimum 10+ years coaching experience

Look for:

  • Movement assessment skills: Can they identify your limitations?
  • Clear communication: Do they explain exercises well?
  • Client results: Ask for testimonials or before/after stories
  • Specialization match: Do they work with people like you?
  • Personality fit: Can you work with them 2-3x/week?

Red flags:

  • No certifications or credentials
  • Cookie-cutter programs (everyone does the same thing)
  • Promises unrealistic results (“Lose 20 lbs in 2 weeks!”)
  • Pushy sales tactics or long-term contracts
  • Doesn’t assess your movement before training

Do you train beginners?

Absolutely. In fact, beginners often see the fastest results because everything is new stimulus.

Perfect for beginners:

  • Never trained before
  • Returning after years off
  • Intimidated by gyms
  • Recovering from injury
  • Want to build a solid foundation

We start with movement quality, build strength progressively, and develop sustainable habits. No judgment, just results.

Can you help with chronic pain?

Yes, but I’m a movement coach, not a physiotherapist. Here’s how it works:

What I can help with:

  • Chronic back pain from poor movement patterns
  • Knee pain from muscle imbalances
  • Shoulder issues from desk work
  • Hip mobility restrictions
  • General stiffness and tightness

My approach:

  1. Identify movement compensations causing pain
  2. Fix underlying mobility restrictions
  3. Strengthen weak areas
  4. Retrain proper movement patterns
  5. Build sustainable strength that lasts

When to see a professional first:

  • Acute injury (happened recently)
  • Sharp, stabbing pain
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Pain that worsens with movement

For acute injuries, see a physiotherapist or doctor first. Once cleared, I can help rebuild strength and prevent re-injury.

Results & Expectations

How long until I see results?

Depends on your starting point and what “results” means to you:

Week 1-2:

  • Better movement quality
  • Improved body awareness
  • Less soreness (after initial DOMS)
  • More energy

Week 4-6:

  • Noticeable strength gains
  • Reduced pain (if applicable)
  • Better posture
  • Clothes fit differently

Month 3+:

  • Significant strength improvements
  • Visible body composition changes
  • Sustainable habits formed
  • Training becomes lifestyle

Reality check: Sustainable results take time. Quick fixes don’t last. Plan for 3-6 months of consistent training.

How many sessions per week do I need?

Recommended frequency:

  • 2x/week: Minimum for consistent progress
  • 3x/week: Optimal for most people
  • 1x/week: Maintenance or supplement to own training

Most clients train 2-3x/week for 3-4 months to build foundation, then drop to 1-2x/week for accountability and progression.

Do I need to follow a specific diet?

No complicated meal plans. Just basic nutrition principles:

The essentials:

  1. Eat enough protein: 0.7-1g per pound of body weight
  2. Stay hydrated: Half your body weight in ounces daily
  3. Eat whole foods: Prioritize real food over processed
  4. Don’t starve yourself: Undereating kills progress

I provide basic nutrition guidance, but I’m not a registered dietitian. For complex nutrition needs, I’ll refer you to a specialist.
